Highland Geological Society

Highland Geological Society organises field trips and lectures to promote the understanding of geology and other earth sciences. Since it was founded in the early 1980s the Society has supported both experienced geologists and geology enthusiasts.

During winter evenings, talks are held monthly on a wide variety of geological interests ranging from the oldest rocks in the British Isles, the 3-billion-year-old rocks of the North West Highlands, to more recent geological discoveries including exploration geology and new palaeontological discoveries in Scotland.

Summer weather allows for members to experience some hands-on geology, and guided field trips are organised to many of our classic areas of interest, for example Assynt, Glen Esk, Skye and Glen Coe. These are always interesting and great fun, attracting a wide group of people from seasoned geologists to those just starting out.  It is a great way to learn about the rocks upon which we live and work.

The Society holds an extensive collection of books that have been mainly donated by past members.  These are held in the central Library at Farraline Park and available for loan to Members of the Society.

We have members living in all parts of the Highlands and Islands and Moray, from Shetland to Elgin.  New members are always welcome. Please get in touch if you are interested in learning more about geology.

How to become a member of Highland Geological Society

No prior knowledge of geology is required – just an interest in finding out more.  If you have any questions or are not yet sure about joining, please use the contact form or why not come along to the next in-person meeting and chat to other members?   You would be most welcome.

The membership form can now be completed online – just click the Membership tab. Confirmation of membership will be sent once the application is processed and payment has been received.
